Field Lacrosse Information

Barrie Minor Lacrosse has put a new focus on our field lacrosse program that started in 2017 with our development programs and continues into 2018.  But field lacrosse for many people remains a mystery for many people.  This email should give you all the answers you need and hopefully we'll see your player out on the field soon!

PLEASE NOTE: Early-Bird Registration ends on February 15th.  See below for details and save money!

Most Common Questions we hear.....

1.) I can't play field, I'm already playing box. How can I do both?

YES! You can play both field lacrosse and box lacrosse at the same time.  Many of our top rep players play both field and box lacrosse for many reasons, but mostly because they love the games!  We schedule to avoid conflicting schedules between the two programs and the field lacrosse season wraps up before the first Box Lacrosse tournaments of the year.

2.) When does the field lacrosse season run?

The field lacrosse season is short one.  In the spring, we start tryouts Mid-March and practices in early April.  The first games of the year will start in the middle of April and run each weekend (on a specific day) until Victoria Day Weekend.  It's a commitment of about six weeks of games plus a few practices beforehand.  Teams will practice once per week on days that don't conflict with Box.

3.) When would we play and where do we have to travel?

The Under 9 (2010/11), Under 11, (2008/09) and Under 13 (2006/07) teams play on Saturdays from mid April to Victoria Day.   The Under 15 (2004/05) and Under 17 (2002/03) teams play on Sundays.  Game locations are usually in Brampton, Mississauga, Guelph and Toronto.  Some teams may also play in Orillia or Whitby.  It is a travel program but many parents find that carpooling helps.

4.) Sorry coach, I have hockey tryouts then... I can't play can I?

YES!  Hockey tryouts cause minimal issues for us as long as the coach knows they will be away.  Many times the tryout times don't directly conflict or the player is able to come to the field after the tryout.  It's something that many of our families deal with every year from AAA to AE and it is usually only a minimal disruption.  As an added bonus, many of our players are fitter than when the hockey season ended because of the running they do.

5.) But I'm new to lacrosse can I still give it a try?

Absolutely.  The field game caters to many different skillsets depending on position.  Our coaches, especially at the younger age groups,  make sure everyone has a chance to try all the positions to see where they fit best.  You may not have great stick skills yet, but you could be a great defender!

6.) Why play field when I'm already playing box?

On top of getting more games and practices in before the start of Box season, Field Lacrosse players who excel have legitimate opportunities for scholarships and to play past the end of Minor Lacrosse both in Canada and in the United States.  Most important, field is lots of fun!

7.) What equipment do I need for Field Lacrosse?

That's the great thing about field, you can wear your box lacrosse equipment and stick!  It's recommended to wear cleats instead of running shoes, especially at older age groups.  Defensive players in field use longer sticks but we can supply them for new players in that position, no need to purchase.

Important Registration Information:

Early-Bird Registration is ongoing now.  If you register by February 15th, you will save $30 by having your tryout fee waived and you will have your choice of jersey number

Registrations will be accepted until March 1st however it is imperative that we have players registered as soon as possible.  There have been instances in the past where people have not registered in a timely manner which means we've canceled teams to great disappointment when people tried to register late.

The OMFLL has a hard deadline of March 1st for us to register our teams.  We require a minimum of 16 players to have a team in a particular age group.  If we do not have sufficient players registered, the team will be cancelled.  OMFLL rules do not allow players to play in older age groups.

New Jersey Designs:

We're very pleased to announce that we have a brand new reversible jersey and shooter shirt combo for our players this year!  Players who fully register by February 15th will be able to select their jersey numbers.

$50 will be added to your registration for the Jersey and Shooter Shirt as they are yours to keep!

Players are expected to wear their Box Lacrosse shorts as part of the uniform, for those not playing Box Rep, arrangements will be made to purchase shorts.

Costs:
Registration for Field Lacrosse is $200 plus $50 for your jersey and shooter shirt.  The jersey and shooter design will remain the same for several years, so you may get multiple seasons out of them.  After February 15th, you will still get to keep your jersey, but number selection will be limited.

Tryout Fees are $30.  Three tryouts have been scheduled with a coach optional 4th tryout date.  If you register by February 15th, your tryout fee is waived!
